Why supervised detox matters
Safety
Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can turn medical without warning — confusion, seizures, delirium tremens. By the time it does, you are in no condition to drive yourself anywhere.
Finishing it
Discomfort is the single most common reason people quit detoxing and go back. Relief that arrives on time is what gets a person to day five.
The next attempt
Each failed attempt teaches the brain that stopping is impossible, and repeated unmanaged withdrawals can make future ones worse. Supervision breaks that cycle.

What withdrawal looks like, substance by substance
Timelines vary by person, dose and how long it has been going on. This is the general shape of it.
Alcohol
Symptoms usually start 6 to 24 hours after the last drink, peak between 24 and 72 hours, and ease over roughly 3 to 7 days. This is the withdrawal we watch most closely. Alcohol treatment →
Opioids
Begins within 8 to 24 hours for shorter-acting opioids, peaks in the first 1 to 3 days, resolves over 4 to 10. Rarely dangerous in itself — but relapse after a few days off is the highest-risk overdose moment there is. Opioid treatment →
Benzodiazepines
Never stopped abruptly here. Withdrawal is managed as a gradual, clinically supervised taper, sometimes over weeks, because abrupt discontinuation can trigger seizures. Benzo treatment →

Questions people ask us
How long does detox take?
Most acute detoxes run about five to seven days. Benzodiazepines are the exception — those are tapered gradually, sometimes over weeks. If a program promises to get you off benzos in a few days, keep looking.
Is it going to hurt?
It is uncomfortable, and we will not pretend otherwise. The difference supervision makes is that the worst of it is treated as it happens instead of endured.
Can I just detox at home?
People try, usually more than once. Alcohol and benzo withdrawal can become a medical emergency, and even where it is not dangerous, hour 40 alone in a bedroom is where most attempts end.
What do I bring?
Comfortable clothes for about a week, ID and insurance card, current medications in their original bottles, contact information for family involved in your care, and a book or journal. Full list →
